The drop will come as Apple releases macOS 11 Big Sur.
Feb 27, 2020 Answer. Thank you for choosing our product. Based on your description, you want to use Office 365 desktop applications on Mac OS Sierra. However, due to the continuous update of Office 365 products and the launch of Mac OS Catalina, Office 365 is no longer supported in Mac OS Sierra. Even if it can be installed, unexpected problems may occur. Cannot load Office 365 with High Sierra. Just purchased a new iMac running High Sierra & trying to install Office 365. Unable to install as I get a message saying installer package is damaged & cannot be opened, move to trash. This is a legitimate 5 user pack, successfully downloaded onto a MacBook Air without any issues. Jan 09, 2018 Cannot load Office 365 with High Sierra. Microsoft 365 is a subscription service offering the latest version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive and Teams. The program offers the Microsoft Suite desktop software for your PC and/or Mac, applications for mobile devices and access to Office Online. Well the latest Office 2019 (Nov 10) was released prior to Big Sur (Nov 12). I guess it's possible that Microsoft may end up blocking Office 2019 updates on High Sierra. If not, if you can figure out the url they get the updates from it should be possible to figure out a way to block the update prompts.
What you need to know
- Office 365 for Mac apps are set to drop support for macOS High Sierra next month.
- Support will officially end on November 10.
- This keeps with Microsoft's practice of supporting the latest three macOS updates.
365 Office Sierra Valley
As we approach the release of macOS 11 Big Sur, Microsoft is preparing to shift its Office 365 support away from another older version of macOS. Specifically, Office 365 apps will no longer support macOS 10.13 High Sierra as of November 10. From that point, only macOS 10.14, 10.15, and 11 will be supported with the Office 365 suite.
In an update to the Office 365 message center (via OnMSFT), Microsoft said:
As of the Microsoft 365 for Mac November 2020 update, macOS 10.14 Mojave or later is required to receive updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. If you continue with an older version of macOS, your Office apps will continue to work but you will no longer receive any updates including security updates.
This move stays in line with Microsoft's practice of supporting the latest three macOS releases with its Office 365 suite. Currently, those include macOS 10.13, 10.14, and 10.15. After the release of macOS 11 Big Sur, the oldest version supported will be 10.14.
As of the release of Big Sur, macOS will support both Intel and ARM-based Macs. Apple is expected to launch Macs sporting its own ARM-based chips later in 2020, and the company says Microsoft's Office apps are already running on ARM-based Macs.
